ABOUT THE EVENT

Gain the confidence to pass the California First-Year Law Students' Exam — not by cramming more law, but by mastering how you study it. Facilitated by Esq. Apprentice Founder & Managing Director Rachel Johnson-Farias, this one and a half hour virtual workshop targets the hidden barriers to test success: exam anxiety, time management, ineffective study habits, and mental blocks that hold back even well-prepared students. Whether you're struggling with focus or freezing on exam day, this course gives you the tools to show up with confidence so you are poised to perform at your best.

What will you get by joining?

A general overview of the California Baby Bar Exam–what it covers, who it’s for, and what to expect;

The chance to closely examine your study habits–and receive some tips on how you may improve;

Proven strategies for active recall, spaced repetition, timed practice, and peak performance under pressure;

Time to converse with and learn from an experienced attorney who failed the California Bar Exam three times before passing, and is therefore uniquely positioned to help you move through exam anxiety and pass the exam with flying colors.

Meet the speaker

Rachel Johnson-Farias

Founder & Executive Director | Esq. Apprentice

Rachel Johnson-Farias is a legal advocate focused on expanding access to justice for low-income communities and communities of color. She is the founder of Esq. Apprentice, a nonprofit that provides legal training to nontraditional law students of color, and works to transform legal education from the ground up. Prior to that, Rachel failed the California Bar Exam not once, but three times–despite going to all the “right” schools, taking on all the “right” debt, and helping pass CA-wide legislation abolishing juvenile record sealing fees. Upon passing the Bar Exam, Rachel decided that her obstacles could become others’ opportunity. She’s eager to share her learnings with attendees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the California Baby Bar Exam? How does it differ from the Bar Exam, and why is it relevant for me?

The California Baby Bar Exam, also known as the First Year Law Students’ Examination (FYLSX) is a mandatory one-day test that is administered by the California Bar Association. If you want to become a lawyer through apprenticeship, it is mandatory that you take the test, as it is required for all students who are studying to become a lawyer through the Law Office Study Program (LOSP). The Baby Bar and the California Bar Exam serve different purposes. Whereas the Baby Bar Exam is taken after only the first year of legal study, the California Bar Exam is only taken after one completes their legal education.

What can I expect from a workshop facilitated by Esq. Apprentice? Generally, what will be covered in an hour?

You can expect to get a clear and substantive overview of California’s Baby Bar Exam, dedicated time for mindfulness and exam-success strategies, an introduction to the structure and content of the test, practice questions with live guidance from your facilitator, Rachel, and an overview of the support and resources Esq. Apprentice offers through its membership program.
